One minute they’re squeezing their tiny toddler arms around your neck and the next they’re strapping on P-plates and driving into the sunset.

But if we can reframe our kids‘ independence from grief into a gift, we may just set ourselves up for our most vibrant years yet.

Reap the relationship rewards!

The first sign Kate Christie’s eldest son gave that he was breaking up with her came at the primary school gate.

“He was about nine when he didn’t want to kiss me at the school gate – that was the first stab in the heart and it was a slow process from there,” recalls Kate, a time management coach and author of The Life List: Master Every Moment And Live An Audacious Life.

“[The break-up] really ramps up when they become older teenagers and start catching trains on their own and get their driver’s licence. Once they’ve got their own car keys, they’re out with their friends and partners.”

But as they go about their own lives, Kate, 53, whose children are now aged 19 to 23, says she’s realised she has so much more time and money for herself.

“When you’ve got kids breaking up with you, it can be like, ‘What do I do now? How do I fill that void?’ There’s a sadness that comes because you are genuinely going to be seeing a lot less of your child. They don’t need you as much and you’re no longer the sun that they orbit around,” she explains.

“It’s a [time for] transformation – we’re finding ourselves with more time and reflecting very deeply on the lives we’ve lived until now and thinking, ‘How do I want this to be different?'”

Embrace the freedom of a new chapter of life that’s focusing on you.

All the years you spent running your kids around to school and sport and supporting their needs will be starting to pay dividends as you enter into a different dynamic.

Kate, who carried much of the parenting load, says she once harboured resentment towards her late ex-husband, but can now appreciate that those exhausting years were worth it.

“At the time, there were clear moments of frustration and exhaustion from carrying that load, but I’m now in a frame of mind where I want to take the good from those experiences,” she says.

“Doing all of the heavy lifting was a gift because I’m now so close to my children and I get a lot of deep love from them. I don’t think I would’ve had that incredible bond but for the fact that I did do all the heavy lifting.”

Kate makes a point of gifting experiences to her children for birthdays and Christmas so they can continue doing fun activities together.

“I don’t want my kids to spend time with me out of guilt, I want them to spend time with me out of genuine desire,” she says.

Set aside some time to create a life list of all the goals you now want to tick off.

(Credit: Getty)

You might pine for a longer cuddle as your adult children race out the front door, but Kate explains that this is hardly a time for sorrow.

“We’ve been told and read that this is a time of crisis and a time of mourning and bitterness,” she says.

“But the women I surveyed say, ‘I’m thrilled for my children and I’m thrilled that I have instilled in them a sense of resilience and independence. I’ve done my job – a brilliant job – and my kids are now going off and forging their beautiful lives. And now it’s my turn.'”

Kate advocates setting aside some quiet time to ponder what we want our lives to look like now, and write a “life list”.

This could include everything from wellbeing to finances to your relationships, new adventures and goals, both big and small.

“Think about all aspects of your life, not just a ‘bucket list’ of adventure and travel, but how do you want to set yourself up?” says Kate.

“We need really solid routines [to achieve our life list] – batch and block time into every day for habits that work well for you, and have a cheer squad of supporters around you that help keep you accountable and celebrate you achieving your goals.”

Children and pets: How to keep your kids safe https://www.nowtolove.com.au/lifestyle/parenting/expert-advice/protecting-kids-from-pet-germs-and-worms-18590/ Wed, 14 Aug 2019 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/parenting/expert-advice/protecting-kids-from-pet-germs-and-worms-18590 While your fur baby is adorable, they could pose potential health and safety risks to kids.

]]>
Australia has one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world. About 62% of Australian households own pets and there are estimated to be over 24 million pets in Australia.

For many pet owners, the pleasure and fun of a four-legged companion far outweighs the animal-borne baddies it may bring home. But how can we be sure our kids are safe from harm?

Not surprisingly, family pets (and their accompanying germs and worms) are at the centre of a modern health dilemma that scientists have coined the ‘hygiene hypothesis’.

The theory suggests that while our increasing obsession with staying germ-free can prevent the spread of disease and infections, leading a cleaner lifestyle may also be responsible for an increase in allergies among children.

Bringing further weight to the argument, research into pets and allergens conducted in the US found that babies exposed to an indoor dog or cat in their first year of life were half as likely to develop animal allergies.

While some children will suffer from animal allergies no matter what, allergens are just one possible health hazard posed by contact with pets. Potentially, your pet can transmit a range of ‘zoonotic’ or animal-to-human diseases.

Some examples of these diseases are rabies (via fleas on rodents, cats and rabbits), ringworm (a fungal infection, not an actual worm), cat scratch fever, parasites such as worms, tick paralysis and tuberculosis.

Infants are going to be particularly susceptible to pet-transmitted diseases and germs due to their immature immune systems, poor hygiene and tendency to have their hands in their mouth.

So how can we interact with our beloved pets in a healthy, fun way without putting our kids at risk?

DOGGY DO’S & DON’TS

Toddlers often love rolling, wresting and swapping kisses with the family dog. Here’s how to focus on the fun and fight off the germs.

• Don’t allow fur pulling or other pet meddling by your toddler. If the dog gets upset and nips or bites, germs in his saliva can cause a potentially serious skin infection. Most mature dogs will have some level of tooth decay or gum disease, with its associated bacteria.

• If you’re sneezing, it may not be the dog itself you’re reacting to, but the dust mites that thrive in places where Fido spends most of his time. Replace dog beds once a year, especially if they are in the basement.

• Bathing dogs has this has been shown to reduce the levels of Can F1 (the protein in dog dander that causes allergic reactions) by as much as 84 percent.

Pets are proven to bring children emotional and physical benefits.

• Don’t feed your dog in the kitchen as dry pet food can carry salmonella. Infections are more likely in young children if pets are fed in the kitchen.

• Doggie treats can be tempting for toddlers to eat and water bowls are fun to splash in, but all of these can carry germs. Place them where your child can’t reach or have him wash his hands after handling them.

• Discourage your toddler from putting your dog’s toys in their own mouth and regularly wash dog toys. You may even decide to remove the dog’s toys until your child is older.

• Most doctors and vets say sleeping in the same bed with a pet isn’t a good idea, so ensure the dog has its own bed outside of the bedroom.

• As part of the whole ‘washing our hands’ lesson, make sure your child knows to do so after petting his pooch.

• Keep the dog’s yard clean of droppings. Dog droppings can carry bacteria and parasites like hookworms.

• Finally, don’t let your dog lick your child’s face or skin – especially if your kid has an open wound, like a scraped knee. Contrary to the French saying which translates as ‘A dog’s tongue is a doctor’s tongue’, dog saliva is neither clean nor antibacterial.

Like with dogs, teach your child to wash hands after petting the cat

CAT CAUTIONS

Cats can be cuddly or deliver a quick swipe of the claw when provoked. Here’s how to reduce the risks…

• Keep your crawler or toddler away from the kitty litter box. Cat droppings carry infection-causing germs.

• It’s also important that you don’t come into contact with cat droppings while you are pregnant as their faeces contains a parasite that can cause toxoplasmosis. This is an infection that can lead to miscarriage or harm your unborn child.

• Most cats will try to worm their way onto your bed if given the chance, so it’s important to set up a spot for them to sleep outside the bedroom – paediatricians particularly warn against babies and kids sleeping with cats.

• Don’t let the cat lick your child’s face or skin, especially if they have are any sores, scratches or open wounds. Despite popular myths, cat’s saliva is not medicinal.

• Like with dogs, teach your child to wash hands after petting the cat.

PET BENEFITS

Having a companion animal has been scientifically proven to bring a multitude of emotional and physical benefits to children as they grow up, from lowering blood pressure and reducing allergies to increasing self-esteem and encouraging nurturing qualities.

So while it’s important to be aware of hygiene and safety when interacting with your pets, most owners would tell you the risks are far outweighed by the feel-good factor.

Work Hours for Mums Affect Sleep & BMIs for Kids https://www.nowtolove.com.au/lifestyle/parenting/expert-advice/mums-working-hours-affect-kids-sleep-and-bmi-18781/ Thu, 17 Dec 2015 23:55:41 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/parenting/expert-advice/mums-working-hours-affect-kids-sleep-and-bmi-18781 A new study shows that children of mothers who work full-time get sleep and have higher BMIs

As if mums need something else to feel guilty about, but new research has come out which is sure to weigh heavily on mums’ shoulders.

A link between mothers’ employment and their preschoolers’ BMI has been found by researchers.

The study looked at links between mothers’ employment status and their children’s weight. The impact of mothers’ jobs on their children’s sleep, dietary habits, the amount of time TV they watched and family mealtime routines was studied.

The study was published in Sleep Medicine and followed 247 mother-child pairs over one year.

The children, who ranged from 3 to 5 years old, were weighed, measured and had their BMI calculated at the beginning of the study and then one year later.

Children whose mothers worked full-time got fewer hours of sleep than children whose mothers worked less than 20 hours per week. The children of women who worked full-time also tended to have higher BMIs at their second weigh-in.

The study also found that only 18% of the preschoolers were sleeping the recommended 11 to 12 hours each night.

The kids studied got about 9.6 hours of sleep each night on average. The researchers found that with each extra hour of sleep that a child had their BMI decreased by 6.8% at their second weigh-in.

This shows a clear link between children’s sleep and their weight. “We looked at nighttime sleep in particular, because studies show that the amount of nighttime sleep matters for regulating weight,” said Professor Liechty, the studies co-author.

“We think that it might be the more hours that mothers are working, the less time they have, and there may be some sort of tradeoff going on, ‘Do I spend quality time with my child or do we get to bed early?'” Dr Speirs, lead author said. “And then in the morning, when mothers leave for work, their children also wake up early to get to day care.”

With this new research and the our already loaded plates with being working mums, it sounds like there’s an extra factor for us to consider for our kids. It’s no easy task being a mother and working outside the home, but this study highlights the need for mothers to additionally consider their children’s health when choosing to full-time work.

If only fathers had these big decisions to make when choosing how to juggle their families and careers.

9 Common Breastfeeding Questions and Answers https://www.nowtolove.com.au/lifestyle/parenting/expert-advice/breastfeeding-q-and-a-18686/ Mon, 14 Dec 2015 01:11:00 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/parenting/expert-advice/breastfeeding-q-and-a-18686 Your essential guide to breastfeeding success with your baby

The post 9 Common Breastfeeding Questions and Answers appeared first on Now To Love.

]]>
Breastfeeding sounds like it might be easy, but surprisingly it can take a little while for both mum and baby to learn how it all works.

It’s not always straightforward, especially in the early days of motherhood and it can all start to feel too hard and overwhelming, especially when your baby is crying!

Read on as Mother & Baby magazine expert and lactation consultant Barb Glare answers all those tricky breastfeeding questions to keep you both attached and feeding happily.

1. How long should breastfeeds take?

There are rarely any “shoulds” when it comes to breastfeeding. Most babies take a long time to feed at first, and there will be days when you feel like you never get off the couch.

Babies will be on one breast for 20 minutes to 30 minutes and, after a nappy change, will spend a similar time on the other breast. But this is a fleeting stage and before you know it she’ll be downing a breast in 10 minutes flat… and you’ll wonder how it all changed so quickly.

If your baby is on one breast for a really long time – say 30 minutes to an hour – there is no doubt she is loving the cuddle time with mum, but she is probably only getting a trickle of milk towards the end. If this is the case it’s better to take her off a bit sooner and offer the other breast.

2. Should I offer just one breast each feed, or should I always offer both breasts?

It’s a good idea to offer both breasts, even if she doesn’t take both breasts.

Your baby’s needs change over time and, in the beginning, most mums have an oversupply of milk and find their bub is satisfied with one breast.

Gradually, she will start taking both breasts at every feed. Feeds will also become much quicker, until she hits the ‘sticky beak stage’ at about four-months-old. Then it’s a quick suck and onto more exciting adventures. But trust your baby – she knows how to work the breast and where her milk comes from.

3. How do I measure what is a three-hourly feed?

Once breastfeeding is up and running, throw out the clock and follow your baby’s lead. She will probably be demanding food before the three-hour mark anyway. But if your baby is very young, sleepy or premature, and not very good at demanding feeds, you may be advised to feed your baby every three hours. Time this from the beginning of one feed to the beginning of the next feed.

4. How can I tell my baby is really drinking, not just sucking, towards the end?

You’ll soon start to notice changes in your baby’s sucking over the course of the feed.

At the start there will be quick, short sucks to elicit the milk ejection (the letdown reflex), followed by longer sucks and maybe even some gulping as she deals with your letdown. Finally, there will be long, rhythmic sucks that taper off as your baby goes to sleep and finally releases the breast. Remember, breastfeeding is about comfort and connection as much as getting food down the hatch.

When babies feed they experience a release of hormones that help them relax and fall asleep (and make mum drowsy too). So let her suck herself to sleep on the breast – it’s what nature intended.

Another tip to look for with your baby is to see her hands. Typically tight fists when she’s sucking and drinking, where as relaxed hands will mean she’s enjoying a comfort suck.

5. I’m finding it hurts when I breastfeed my little one. How much pain should I be experiencing?

A little tenderness in the early days is pretty common, but breastfeeding doesn’t hurt, so if you’re experiencing pain you need to get help.

Get in touch with a lactation consultant or a breastfeeding counsellor who can assess your situation and offer you assistance.

6. How do I know when my baby is finished feeding on one side?

Most babies will let you know fairly clearly when they have finished the first side – and to keep you on your toes, this will change from feed to feed, and over time!

Generally speaking, your baby will release the nipple when she’s finished. However, very young babies might be enjoying the snuggle so much they will stay on one breast for a very long time.

If she has had 20 minutes or so on one side, it’s okay to gently break the suction by easing a clean finger into the side of her mouth. Burp her, change her nappy and offer her the other side, which she may or may not take.

Pretty soon your baby will finish feeding on one side in about 10 minutes, fuss to tell you she wants more, then guzzle down the other side. You won’t believe she can finish a feed so quickly.

7. How many kilojoules a day does feeding use up?

Breastfeeding burns around 1250 to 2100 kilojoules a day, helping you use up the reserves of fat accumulated in pregnancy.

Your milk supply is not affected much by diet, but eat a well-balanced diet for your own benefit and don’t be surprised if you’re more hungry than usual.

8. Can you explain to me what a ‘demand feed’ is? My baby always seems hungry.

Demand feeding means your baby ‘asks’ and you feed her. It’s really the easiest way to breastfeed. Most newborns feed at least eight to 12 or more times in one 24-hour period. In that time they’ll usually have one longer sleep (for a newborn, three hours is as good as it gets).

Then there will be another time of the day or night when they have a cluster of feeds very close together. It seems like a lot of feeds, but if you count how many times you put something into your mouth – snacks, cups of tea, meals – it’s not that different.

Human bodies need constant refuelling, and babies’ tummies are tiny so empty quickly!

9. What does it mean when people say bring ‘baby to breast’ and not ‘breast to baby’ when feeding?

It means that when you breastfeed your baby, you should sit back comfortably in a chair and bring your baby up to your breast, rather than hunch over to drop the breast in your baby’s mouth, since this gets very hard on your back after a while.

You may have to lean forward a bit to attach your baby, but when she is on the breast and happily sucking, readjust your position so that you can sit back comfortably and cradle your baby.
