Fight the seasonal blues with these incredible SAD lamps https://www.nowtolove.com.au/lifestyle/best-sad-lamps-australia/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 23:31:51 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/?p=510260 Seasonal depression got you down?

The post Fight the seasonal blues with these incredible SAD lamps appeared first on Now To Love.

]]>
Transitioning from the warm summer months into dreary winter days can take its toll on your mood. So much so that it actually has a name: seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

Described by Mayo Clinic as “a type of depression that’s related to changes in seasons”, SAD (also known as seasonal depression) commonly occurs at the same time each year, coinciding with the shorter days’ lack of sunshine.

While some may be surprised that this phenomenon actually has a name, it may be even more of a shock that there are recommended treatments.

While (unfortunately) we can’t coax the sun to come out more often, SAD lamps have taken over as an effective treatment to the condition.

Here, we round up the best SAD lamps on the market.

The best SAD lamps to shop in Australia

01

Fitfirst Light Therapy Lamp

$39.99 at Amazon

Rated ‘Amazon’s Choice’ for light therapy lamps, this affordable SAD lamp comes with three colour brightness levels and a timer.

The USB device can be easily placed on top of your desk while working.

Key features:

  • 3 adjustable colour settings
  • Auto timer

02

Touch Control Smart LED SAD Lamp

$54 at Dick Smith

Similar to our first selection, this SAD Lamp is a rectangular desk topper, ideal for compact working.

With one warm yellow colour, the LED light can be adjusted to five brightness settings.

Key features:

  • 5 brightness settings
  • Auto timer

03

Solalamp S.A.D. Lamp Pro

$129 (originally $189.99) at Solalamp

With five colour/brightness options, the Solalamp is uber-tailorable.

Kitted with white noise soundtracks as an added bonus, the foldable lamp can also be customised with a timed display.

Key features:

  • 5 colour/brightness settings
  • 10+ white noise soundtracks
  • Auto timer

04

Philips Wake-up Light

$126.83 at Amazon

The Philips Wake-up Light is designed not just as a tool for combating SAD but as an innovative device that enhances waking up, making it a gentler and more natural process.

It utilises a combination of light and sound to simulate sunrise, gradually increasing in intensity to gently wake you up in a more natural way than the abruptness of a traditional alarm clock.

Key features:

  • 4 brightness settings and 10 light intensities
  • 30 minute sunrise simulation

05

BioLight™ Full Spectrum + Infrared Light Panel

$579.95 at Block Blue Light

If you’re looking to get heavy-duty, the BioLight™ Full Spectrum + Infrared Light Panel may be the SAD lamp for you.

Granted, it’s on the pricier side, the BioLight emits full spectrum and near infrared light to simulate natural sunlight. The lamp certainly has the research to back it at least!

Key features:

  • Utilises full spectrum visible light and near-infrared light
  • Timer
  • Brightness control

What are SAD lamps and how do they work?

Designed to target seasonal affective disorder (SAD), SAD lamps are designed to mimic natural sunlight, which can be scarce during autumn and winter months.

As it is linked to changes in seasons, these lamps work by emitting light that is much brighter than that of standard indoor lighting, typically delivering 10,000 lux, which is a measure of light intensity perceived by the human eye.

Please note: The information provided here is not intended as medical advice. It is advisable to consult with your doctor or healthcare professional before making any changes to your health or wellness routine.

We’re all feeling the pinch right now when it comes to money.

So, Woman’s Day has created a cheat sheet guide on how you can save on your grocery bill!

Save before you buy

Never be tempted by impulse buys again when you make an e-list. Apps such as WiseList take advantage of other features including nutritional information.

You can even load your recipes on there, search for other recipes and add those ingredients to the shopping list. It also has the ability to store and keep track of upcoming bills.

Embrace technology

Get money back by using apps such as Cashrewards. Each time you make a purchase with supermarket retailers linked to the site, the platform receives a commission and then part of this commission is given back to you as a cashback payment.

Money will be returned via PayPal or a bank account – it’s a way to save without even having to think about it! Download supermarket rewards points apps as well and take advantage of discounts and offers.

Diversify your shop

According to Finder research, one in three Aussies do not shop at the big two supermarkets. Graham Cooke, head of consumer research at Finder says that diversifying your shop is the best way to get the most bang for your buck. For example, Finder research found that Aldi can often be cheaper on some staples.

“Shopping around widely will help you identify where you can get the most value for your money,” says Graham. “Especially in this climate, awareness can go a long way.”

Buy in bulk

When you see a staple that is on special, buy it in bulk. Think non-perishables such as detergent, toilet paper, dishwasher tablets and kitty litter. It can mean big savings in the long run.

Buying in bulk also means you won’t need to make multiple trips to the shops to top up, which means a saving in petrol and time. Consider looking into the prices at wholesale warehouse club Costco as well, if there is one nearby.

Shop from the pantry

Think the cupboard is bare? Take another look. Before you order takeaway or head to the supermarket, consider getting a little creative.

There is a plethora of ideas on what to make with limited ingredients in Woman’s Day’s food pages and also on YouTube. It’s amazing what you can whip up with whatever is left in the pantry or fridge and a little bit of ingenuity.

Prize pooches and fancy felines become stars at the Sydney Royal Easter Show https://www.nowtolove.com.au/lifestyle/sydney-royal-easter-show-dogs-cats/ Sun, 17 Mar 2024 19:30:00 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/?p=507849 Best in show.

The post Prize pooches and fancy felines become stars at the Sydney Royal Easter Show appeared first on Now To Love.

Winning a prestigious dog or cat show might not net owners big bucks in prize money but best in show fame can catapult a prize pooch or fancy feline to stardom.

And for the entrants to the Sydney Royal cat and dog competitions, winning is the ultimate Australian accolade. Sandy Reeve and Tina Clift’s Italian greyhounds, Piccino King of Bling and in 2021 Piccino You Only Live Twice won Best in Group.

“Everyone dreams of taking home Best in Show from the Royal,” Sandy tells Woman’s Day. “It’s the absolute cream of the crop.”

It took years of work for the dogs to claim their crowns.

“The first thing is buying a quality dog or breeding them yourself,” says Sandy, who has bred Italian greyhounds for 25 years and judges dog shows all over the world. “We train our dogs from puppies – just for a few minutes a day,” she says.

Meanwhile, Jessica Woodrow breeds ragdoll cats and is the owner of Kirei She’s a Superstar – known as Fat Girl – a blue bi-colour ragdoll who took home the Royal’s feline Best in Show in 2022.
This year Jessica has high hopes for Kirei She’s First Class.

“Preparation starts six months beforehand,” Jessica explains. “Ragdolls are a long-haired breed, so lose their coat if it’s too hot. This means we keep them inside with the aircon on with specific timers to stop this from happening. Our whole life revolves around the cats.”

In the lead-up to show day, the preparation is full-on, with Sandy explaining how her dogs have an extensive shave, a bath and teeth cleaning.

“Once we’re backstage, it’s very tense. We’ll put cream on the dogs’ legs before chalking them to hide any marks or blemishes and make their legs whiter. Then I might put chalk down their face to make it white, in case they’ve got a bit of sunburn,” she explains, adding that other owners paint their dogs if they have grey hairs. Prep work for cats involves some extra TLC.

“I comb and brush them every day, and use purple shampoo to brighten their coat and give it a gorgeous gleam,” explains Jessica. “On show day, I’m up at 4.30am so I can wipe their eyes, paws and ears with a damp cloth. Once we’re at the show, it’s constant grooming and cuddling, so they feel happy when they go out.”

400 different breeds of animals are present at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. (Image: Getty)

While most of the competitors are friendly, there’s definitely some backstage rivalry. “Like in any sport, there’s some sniping that goes on,” says Sandy. “You do hear people say, ‘Oh, I don’t like their dog.’”

Jessica agrees. “It can get very competitive. I’ve heard of people lodging complaints that a cat hasn’t had its nails clipped properly. Anything people can pick up on to get an advantage,” she says.

“Things can get spicy – particularly among the Maine Coon and Bengal exhibitors. Ragdoll breeders are pretty relaxed – my biggest competitors have become some of my greatest friends.”

Despite the intensive and costly preparation, the prize money isn’t huge – this year’s Best in Show dog will take home $2500. However, both women say it’s not about the money.

“Winning puts our breed on the map,” says Jessica. “It’s a real passion project.”

Sandy agrees. “A trophy is nice but it’s about the prestige of winning. Knowing you have the best dog in Australia is wonderful.”

Brought to you by The Lady Shake

The hectic holiday season is over, the kids are finally back to school and it’s time to take a moment … for yourself. Feeling bloated? Burnt out? Trying to shift a few Christmas kilos that have rudely outstayed their welcome?

Kickstart your 2024 health journey with these three tiny tweaks that will have a huge impact on your wellbeing. More importantly, these sustainable, hassle-free hacks are a simple and healthy way to shed any excess weight while nourishing your body, improving your health and helping you to feel great, without a fad diet in sight.

Breakfast of champions!

Nutritionists have long recommended a healthy breakfast that “breaks the fast”, but high-sugar options, like many popular cereals, just don’t make the grade. A breakfast that’s packed with protein and low in sugar is the gold standard to keep your sugar levels stable and your appetite satisfied for longer. It’s also been found that a hearty breakfast can stop you from making unhealthy food choices later on in the day. Poached eggs and omelets are excellent options, but can be time-consuming to prepare in the early morning rush and can also feel repetitious day after day.

Let’s be honest, all our good intentions can fly out the window when we’re racing the clocks to get out the door, and we can often reach for the not-so-healthy cereal option for a quick fix. For a fast and easy option, try swapping the cereal for a protein shake – a must-have pantry staple. However, not all protein shakes are created equal – it’s important to read the label, as some are poor quality and packed with sugar or additives.

A quality option is The Lady Shake – it’s a nutritious meal-replacement shake that is specifically designed for women. It’s high in protein (29 grams!) and fibre, to keep you feeling fuller for longer, and is also packed with essential vitamins and minerals for optimal health. Essentially, The Lady Shake is low in sugar – in fact, up to 84% less sugar than some other meal replacement shakes. That equates to 88 less teaspoons per week! Surely that would put you in calorie credit to enjoy a guilt-free afternoon bickie or well-deserved evening glass of wine?!

(Credit: Supplied)

Essential step: meal prep

As the saying goes, “If you fail to prepare, then prepare to fail.” This piece of advice applies to meal planning as well. Modern life is frantic – especially for the modern woman who is juggling so many balls at once – kids, career and relationships all while keeping the house running and the family fed. Writing a shopping list and a weekly meal plan may feel like just one more thing to add to your already overloaded to-do list, but it will save you a tonne of time and also help you to make smarter food choices.

An added bonus is that a scheduled meal plan may make you less likely to dial for takeaway at dinnertime, which is not only better for your health but also a bonus for the budget! Don’t forget to also add healthy snacks and protein shakes to your shopping list – an essential part of your planning is to ensure that you have quick hunger-busters within easy reach when you’re out and about, have to work through lunch or just don’t have time to prepare a meal from scratch.

Pop a protein sachet in your handbag and just mix with water when needed – a healthy shake on the run can prevent a calorie-laden, fast food drive-through when you’re hungry. Remember, as the Girl Guides say, be prepared!

(Credit: Getty)

Pump up the flavour!

Making healthy choices shouldn’t mean depriving yourself – after all, life is to be enjoyed! Concentrate on food choices that are not only nutritious but also absolutely delicious! If your food is full of flavour, you’ll be less likely to crave unhealthy alternatives. Herbs, spices, chilli, ginger, garlic and lemon or lime juice can turn a simple meal into a taste-bud sensation.

Craving a sweet treat? Indulge in a fruity smoothie, frozen grapes, delicious dates or popcorn with a dusting of cinnamon. Savoury snacks such as healthy dips and veggie sticks, baked chickpeas or seaweed nori are clever options.

Also don’t forget that yummy meal replacement shakes can come in mouth-watering flavours that will also hit the spot. Prepare to drool when you taste The Lady Shake’s offerings – chocolate, strawberry, banana, vanilla and coffee as well as – wait for it! – Choc Mint, Honeycomb, Caramel and Cookies and Cream. With flavours this indulgent, who needs ice-cream?

Does Amazon have sales on Boxing Day?

Yes! Like many other retailers, Amazon often participates in various sales events and promotions throughout the year, including Boxing Day.

Last year, Amazon offered discounts across beauty, fashion, lifestyle and more from December 23 to December 28 – so stay tuned for bigger and better deals to drop.

Is Black Friday sales better than Boxing Day?

While Black Friday takes place in November, Boxing Day is held towards the end of December (on the 26th to be exact) which means your intentions may vary for both sale periods.

For instance, Black Friday is perfect for getting all your Christmas gifts and decorations sorted for the holiday season, while Boxing Day is great for looking ahead and getting all your last-minute items for the new year.

Either way, both sales come at an opportune time to shop so you can save big on your wish list items, and treat yourself in the process.

Preventing common skin conditions of ageing https://www.nowtolove.com.au/lifestyle/daily-life/ageing-skin-conditions-prevention-and-care-79526/ Mon, 11 Dec 2023 00:53:41 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/lifestyle/daily-life/ageing-skin-conditions-prevention-and-care-79526 Skin conditions can creep up on you, especially as you age, but as with most things, prevention is better than a cure.

The post Preventing common skin conditions of ageing appeared first on Now To Love.

Brought to you by Molicare.

Whether you’re caring for someone prone to skin irritations or have ageing skin yourself, being able to recognise common skin conditions is essential in preventing them. While some age-related skin conditions are inevitable and should be embraced (hello wrinkles!) others are much more straightforward to deal with. Follow our 3-step guide to recognise, prevent and care for some common skin complaints.

Recognising common skin conditions

The first step in preventing skin flare ups is knowing what you’re looking for. As you age your skin will naturally start to get thinner and more fragile. This can lead to dry and itchy skin, as well as other common conditions including age spots, skin tags and bruising. More serious complaints, such as bed sores, skin tears and incontinence associated dermatitis (IAD) may also appear.

Some conditions will be easy to spot – for example, dry and itchy skin will be evident. It’s important not to scratch itchy skin as this can make it worse and cause infections. Other skin conditions like IAD may start slowly before becoming a painful problem. IAD is caused when fragile skin is repeatedly exposed to urine. The constant washing – and using the wrong products – can make the area become inflamed, irritated and, in serious cases, infected.

Step 2: Preventing painful skin problems

Prevention is key when it comes to managing skincare, be it in yourself or someone you’re caring for, and there are some simple measures you should be taking now. These include having short warm showers rather than long hot showers, staying hydrated and protecting your skin when you’re in the sun.

Take a look at the skincare products you’re using, too – it’s probably time to change them for products that are more suitable for ageing skin. Regular soaps, for example, can be too harsh on older skin as they can strip essential oils, change the pH and damage the natural protection layer. You need a milder formulation, such as MoliCare Skin Wash Lotion, which is a gentle cleansing wash that has been dermatologically tested and contains moisturising ingredients.

Step 3: Use the right products

As well as changing the body wash you use, there are a range of other everyday products that will help you protect your skin and stop problems developing. It’s important to keep ageing skin well nourished – moisturising daily with MoliCare Skin Body Lotion will help strengthen the skin’s barrier and regeneration function. Give your hardworking hands some extra TLC, too, by using MoliCare Skin Hand Cream, which is enriched with almond oil.

For more serious conditions, such as IAD and bed sores in people that are bedridden, you’ll need to start using barrier products to protect the sensitive areas of the skin from the irritating effects of urine. MoliCare Skin Barrier Cream or the MoliCare Skin Protection Foam forms a transparent protective film on the skin. These products can help maintain the skin’s natural moisture balance, too.

Where to get more help

The important thing to know about skin conditions is you don’t need to suffer in silence. For more advice on looking after sensitive skin – and to find the right products for you – go to MoliCare or talk to your pharmacist.

Brought to you by MoliCare.

Stella Women: The face of fertility Nicole Liu on revolutionising women’s productive health https://www.nowtolove.com.au/lifestyle/daily-life/the-face-of-fertility-nicole-liu-on-revolutionising-womens-productive-health-69936/ Sun, 21 Nov 2021 13:00:00 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/lifestyle/daily-life/the-face-of-fertility-nicole-liu-on-revolutionising-womens-productive-health-69936 How her tech start-up helps women gain more control over their reproductive health.

The post Stella Women: The face of fertility Nicole Liu on revolutionising women’s productive health appeared first on Now To Love.

]]>
Welcome to our Stella Women series celebrating the game-changing women who aren’t afraid to shatter glass ceilings and drive change for other women. We’re proud to partner with Stella Insurance to amplify the voices of these formidable females. Previously, we sat down with the CEO and founder of Australia’s first all-female rideshare service, Shebah, and trainer Leah Simmons who founded revolutionary fitness platform, KAAIAA. Today, we’re speaking with Nicole Liu, the CEO and founder of Kin Fertility, a start-up that is changing the way we view fertility, and reproductive health.

Nicole Liu’s story is a deeply personal one, however it isn’t a story that is uncommon for Australian women. Her own health journey highlighted the fact that we don’t really talk about our fertility or reproductive health nearly as much as we should.

After being misdiagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and told that she might be infertile, investment banker Nicole had a lot of questions for her doctors. Feeling isolated, she began to research PCOS online and realised that a massive 1 in 10 women in Australia had the syndrome. So why hadn’t she ever heard of it? She started to chat to her friends, and they too shared their own fertility questions and struggles. That’s when the light bulb went off – if so many women are experiencing issues with reproductive health and fertility, there needed to be a platform that could provide trusted information and better access to women’s healthcare.

It was then, at just 25, Nicole launched the start-up Kin Fertility, which is now putting the spotlight on women’s fertility and reproductive questions. With interactive checklists, fertility supplements and essentials, 1:1 consults with fertility experts, plus easy to read guides on conceiving, pregnancy and post postpartum, it’s all about healthcare on women’s terms.

Now To Love: We’d love to know more about the woman behind the brand. Where did you grow up and what led you to originally start your career in investment banking?

Nicole Liu: I was born and bred in Sydney, Australia. My parents came to Australia from China, with not a lot of money and didn’t really know the language. So growing up, they started a lot of small businesses to make a living – from embroidery factories, internet and IT services to even an Italian eatery.

My family never wanted me to start my own company. To them, a stable, corporate job with a predictable path upwards and onwards was what they had dreamed for me. So as I was studying, I chased what I thought was a challenging, stable career ladder that I could climb – investment banking.

NTL: Tell us more about Kin and why Australian women needed a platform specifically focused on fertility and reproductive health?

NL: When it comes to women’s fertility and reproductive health, there’s a fair bit of stigma associated with it. What this leads to is a lack of awareness of the issues that women may experience when it comes to their fertility and reproductive health. The flow on effect of this is less research, development and investment into creating solutions for these problems.

Here’s a stat: In 2019, there were over 1,000 studies about erectile dysfunction. But for female infertility, there were less than 200 studies. Having a platform specifically focused on fertility and reproductive health enables us to give voice to these issues, and focus specifically on them.

NTL: You recently launched an Australian first subscription which delivers your contraceptive pill straight to your door (PS we LOVE this). How did the idea come about and how quickly are you seeing the subscriptions grow?

NL: Simple! We were a small team of women that found it incredibly inconvenient to go to the doctor to get their contraception. We were confused why an easier (digital) way to access our contraception didn’t exist – so we had a crack at building it. In our first year alone, over 40k members signed up. Turned out, they thought this should have existed too.

From easier access to the contraceptive pill to providing vital education about women’s health issues, Kin are breaking boundaries.

NTL: What do you think we should be teaching the next generation about consent, sex education and reproductive health?

NL: Honestly, there are so many unanswered questions when it came to the sex education and reproductive health education I had growing up.

For me, the first thing is understanding your body and knowing what symptoms are normal vs. red flags. Let’s talk about the fact that if you have excruciating period pain that leaves you crying on the bathroom floor every month, that’s not “just period pain”. It might be a symptom of endometriosis. How excessive unexplained weight gain and excessive hair growth could be driven by a hormonal condition known as PCOS. Let’s talk about painful sex and how that may be a symptom of vulvodynia or vaginismus. And then let’s talk about how none of this means that your body is broken. Let’s then talk about how to advocate for yourself to doctors or people who might not hear your pain and listen to you.

Then there’s a whole fertility conversation to be had. For one, let’s learn about ovulation and how the baby-making process actually works. Let’s stop giving the impression that it’s ridiculously easy to fall pregnant for everyone. Let’s talk about the fact that 1 in 6 people struggle to conceive, and how age is a big part of that equation. We should talk about egg freezing as an option, and how to make that decision. You want people leaving school knowing that they should be thinking about their fertility proactively, not reactively. Because making informed decisions earlier in life gives you more options.

And then lastly I reckon there’s a whole sexual wellness conversation to be had. Talking about our anatomy, consent, how to have pleasure. Let’s talk about how there are different sexualities and how that’s very normal… and so much more.

NTL: Both Stella and Kin have a common goal which is to empower women through education and support. How important is this overarching goal to you personally and the team at Kin?

NL: Especially when it comes to your own body, knowledge, education and support are so important. It’s the language and the tools you have to make decisions about your own body.

Someone once said to me “If you don’t know your options, you don’t have any.” I think that resonated so much with me, and is definitely a driving force for why we do what we do.
