They’re grumpy and dramatic, they start arguments and they’re partial to the odd temper tantrum.
Nope, we’re not talking about your three-year-old nephew. We’re actually referring to the contestants of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!.
You don’t have to watch far into any of the past seasons before seeing the evidence.
A handful of celebrities get dumped into the jungle to fend for themselves while being pitted against each other for the simplest of luxuries – drama ensues… you know the drill.
But it seems that it’s not all doom and gloom where our favourite contestants are concerned.
In fact, it turns out there is some leeway when it comes to the filming of the hit TV show, and we can’t really blame the producers – how else are you going to convince multiple celebrities to temporarily give up their plushy, glitzy lives?

And as the fifth season of I’m A Celebrity gets underway on Australian screens, we decided to take a look at all the behind the scenes secrets in order to work out exactly just how tough these celebs have it.
And the results? Well, lets just say we won’t be sympathising with them too much – although we can’t deny it’ll make some great viewing.

Faux celebs are used
Who’d a thunk it?
Turns out, in order to ensure each challenge is as TV worthy as possible, a run through by stand-ins takes place.
“We test every trial before we put our celebrities through their paces,” said executive producer Stephen Tate in 2017.

They all get a bag of goodies
Well, they are celebrities – so to avoid any puppy dog eyes, a show insider reveals each contestant gets a goodie bag containing dental floss, toothpaste, a toothbrush, moisturiser, shampoo, conditioner, a razor and a towel.
Additionally, it turns out there was no excuse for Tziporah’s sunburn back in 2017!
“Celebrities are issued with sunscreen and repellent,” tells an insider.

They get toilet paper!
Unlike the Australian Survivor gang, the jungle dwellers receive six rolls of toilet paper. These are “replenished as needed”, shares the source.
The pay is MASSIVE
According to reports, US contestant and comedian Tom Arnold would pocket more than $40,000 a week.
However, it’s nowhere near the more than the $60,000 a day figure Shane Warne was said to have taken home following his stint.
For that much, we’d be pretty tempted ourselves!
Hundreds of celebs are asked to apply
Stephen explains that more than 500 celebrities have been approached to join the cast of the popular reality TV show in past years.
As for his dream contender? “Hands down Robbie Williams,” he revealed.

I’m a Celebrity by the numbers
The creative team start planning the trials six months out from the show’s launch.
The winning celeb will have consumed a total of nearly 2kg of beans, 2.2kg of rice and 1.1kg of oats by the show’s finale.
100,000 cockroaches will be used in trials across the series, 70 litres of mealworms and superworms, 10,000 fire ants, 120 litres of maggots, 400 rats, 200 scorpions, 20 litres of crickets and 200 snakes. Um, gross.
There are 435 crew, 62 cameras and 15 editing suites.
