It’s 2024: the year of getting moving and kicking our health and fitness goals and what better way to do that than yoga?

If you haven’t tried your hand at the centuries-old practice, the time to treat your body to a whole new way of moving is now, especially as the benefits yoga can have on your body are endless.

Yoga can be traced back almost 5,000 years ago, with the practice originating in India, and has since become a staple in health, wellness and mindfulness training worldwide. Yoga is not only a way of physically training and working your body but it is incredibly psychological as well – which makes it the perfect practice for those of us who struggle to get out of our heads.

Benefits of yoga include increased flexibility, muscle tone and stability, improved energy and vitality, not to mention improved sleep patterns and mental clarity.

How to start getting involved in yoga?

Something particularly enticing about practising yoga is that it is relatively low impact which is great for beginners, older bodies and if you are working on your fitness levels which might put you off traditional workouts. It also can be done in the comfort of your home and does not require mass amounts of equipment to train.

If you’re wanting to try your hand at yoga this year then here are some tips and tricks to help you on your way.

1. Choose your style

There are many styles of yoga all targeting different needs for the body and mind. There is the soft and calming Vinyasa yoga which aims to use smooth, flowing motion throughout (it’s a great style for beginners), Kundalini is great for stimulating positive energy, Bikram yoga to get your sweat flowing and many more.

2. Get to class or try following along at home

It is helpful when starting out in yoga to attend some classes to get the hang of basic movements and have the guidance of a trained professional to help you engage the correct muscles and movements to get the most out of your workout.

However it is not essential and there are endless follow along videos on the internet that can help get you started if you want to gain some confidence before heading into the studio.

3. Get equipped

The only equipment you really require to get started is a yoga mat – preferably non-slip to prevent accidents – and then you’re good to go!

Outer beauty is fostered through a healthy and balanced lifestyle, according to the owner of ‘JSHealth’ https://www.nowtolove.com.au/health/jshealth-vitamins/ Thu, 07 Mar 2024 01:51:47 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/?p=507010 “Beauty starts from within”.

There seems to be countless trends, ingredients and supplements making the rounds within the beauty and wellness space at the moment – but how do you know which ones actually work and aren’t just a gimmick?

Now To Love spoke with Jessica Sepel, wellness expert and founder of vitamin and supplement company JSHealth Vitamins, to find out just exactly what trends and products you should jump on the bandwagon of to help you live a healthy and balanced lifestyle and improve both your inner and outer beauty.

Jessica Sepel, founder of JSHealth. (Image: JSHealth)

Jessica’s overarching philosophy is to nourish your health and confidence from the inside out. She is a big believer in beauty and health starting from within, and is a strong advocate for having a healthy and balanced lifestyle, focusing on what you eat first and foremost.

“It all starts with what’s on your plate, and focusing on whole foods is key! I recommend incorporating a rainbow of fruits and vegetables for their diverse vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants,” Jessica shared.

Based on this philosophy, Jessica also believes that fad diets that promise unrealistic results and are based on restrictive rules are unsustainable and often don’t deliver.

“Instead of opting for quick fixes, I believe in building a sustainable, balanced approach to wellness, inside and out. This means focusing on high-quality ingredients, mindful eating and truly listening to your body.”

Indeed, Jessica has revealed that JSHealth Vitamins was founded and built upon the basis of giving up fad dieting, so it is one topic she is extremely passionate about.

JSHealth Vitamins’ Hair + Energy supplement is a best seller. (Image: JSHealth Vitamins)

When asked about emerging trends in the health and wellness industry, Jessica said “the rise of ingestible beauty that focuses on hair and skin health from the inside out” is one trend she is particularly excited about.

“By focusing on a gut-friendly diet rich in wholefoods, fibre and fermented foods, we can support the health of our gut microbiome – leading to a complexion that reflects what is on the inside: a thriving, balanced and radiant environment,” Jessica told Now To Love.

JSHealth Vitamins has a huge focus on hair and skin health, with their Hair + Energy supplement being a best-selling product and named the “Number 1 Hair Supplements Product in Australian Pharmacy”.

Their Hair + Energy capsules claim to support hair growth and health, maintain hair thickness and strength, maintain nail health and strength, support skin health, and support energy levels.

Promoting beauty from within and the connection between inner health and outer beauty is a key pillar in JSHealth’s product philosophy, and Jessica has revealed that her “passion is helping people reclaim their confidence.”

“When you start to prioritise wellness from within, this allows you to cultivate a strong inner foundation of lasting comfort and confidence that radiates outwards,” Jessica said.

Knowing the overwhelming nature of the world of supplements, JSHealth’s product formulas were created alongside leading experts in the field “to create targeted formulas designed to address specific concerns,” so that consumers know exactly what each supplement is designed to support.

This is a key reason as to why JSHealth Vitamins’ products are named after their purposes.

Jessica said: “People often know about everyday supplements like vitamin C or fish oil, but might not understand how these nutrients can help them, especially when paired with other key ingredients for synergy and effectiveness.”

“We designed our Signature Range to bridge this knowledge gap and provide solutions that are easy to understand and apply. Each formula’s name clearly states its purpose to simplify the selection process,” she continued.

One of JSHealth Vitamins‘ initiatives, Menstrual March, is currently taking place where they focus on women’s health.

According to Jessica, the company “is looking at how hormones and mood are related and how to support balance throughout the ebb and flow of womanhood”.

As part of Menstrual March, JSHealth Vitamins is offering their new ‘Happy Hormones Cookbook’ for free. You can grab your copy here.

Some of their most popular products are their Hair + Energy, Detox + Debloat and Skin + Digestion formulas. (Image: JSHealth Vitamins)

JSHealth Vitamins has a large range of products with supplements, skincare, haircare, proteins and protein bars, and a variety of accessories available.

The brand also has some new products and ranges on the horizon, with Jessica telling Now To Love that they’re adding to their sleep and night-time range as well as expanding their “science-backed vitamin skincare line with a very exciting and transformative product”.

As a leading brand in the health and wellness space, JSHealth Vitamins ultimately aims to “empower [their] community to make informed decisions about their wellness” and the company takes an “intuitive, solution-focused approach” in promoting beauty from within.

If you’re on the hunt for a new form of exercise that gets you in shape, is enjoyable, and challenges your body but isn’t too high an impact on joints and muscles – then Pilates is the answer!

Pilates has absolutely taken the world, and particularly Australia, by storm. It’s a favourite of celebrities, models and athletes alike and now it has never been easier to try for yourself.

“Pilates is not the new kid on the block, but has definitely surged in popularity the last few years,” says Brianna Law, product manager for Rebalance Pilates & Yoga.

“Since the global pandemic, many people have been searching for at-home workouts that don’t necessarily require equipment, and Pilates is a solution, offering a versatile workout that can be taken anywhere.”

In fact, Pilates has been around since the early 1920s, introduced by German trainer Joseph Pilates, and was created by combining aspects of Yoga, martial arts, gymnastics, and dance.

But if you want to try your hand at Pilates, you may want to invest in a pair of special grip socks to prevent slipping and injuries.

“When purchasing grip socks, find a pair that fits well. If they are too tight they can be uncomfortable, but too loose and they won’t provide appropriate traction. I’d also recommend materials such as cotton or bamboo which are moisture-wicking and breathable.

“Aside from that, find a pair that you find aesthetically pleasing to encourage you to wear them every time you step into the studio,” says Brianna.

What is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates is a form of exercise that uses a machine called the ‘reformer’ that essentially looks like a bed frame but with a series of straps and pulleys to create resistance in your movements, thus allowing the use of different muscles whilst you exercise.

We spoke to Emma Stallworthy, the founder of Your Reformer – a platform that allows you to rent or buy your very own reformer machine for home – to discuss the benefits of Reformer Pilates.

“Reformer Pilates has traditionally been known for rehabilitation or for elite dancers. In the past few years as more studios have opened with mainstream fitness style classes, its popularity has grown exponentially,” she says.

“If you’ve tried a class, it’s easy to see why – so much variety in the movements and repertoire, so adaptable for different bodies, ages and fitness levels, it’s low impact so can be used as a daily movement, and it changes our body shapes like no other exercise I’ve known. The self-confidence and empowerment are second to none.”

There are endless benefits to Pilates, both physical and mental.

 • Core strength and stability: Pilates has a major focus on core strength, and many of the movements in classes and workouts target the abdominal muscles and strengthen the area. This leads to improvements in posture and general stability.
 • Increased flexibility: as much of Pilates includes stretching of the muscles, practisers will notice better flexibility as a result and general improvement of movement.
 • Stress relief: Pilates incorporates deep breathing and mindful focus and can help to destress and relax the mind.

Pilates is also a great workout for mature age women, as it is low impact it doesn’t put as much pressure on joints which can cause injuries.

“Pilates offers an incredible low-impact approach to strengthening the body, with a particular focus on balance and stability. Pilates apparatus such as the reformer or Cadillac, are phenomenal tools to help adapt exercises seen in the mat Pilates repertoire by offering a plethora of exercises to decrease load and offer support for the body,” says Brianna Law.

The great thing about Pilates is that there are many ways to adapt exercises to better suit the participants’ needs and strengths, as well as focusing on movements that can strengthen weaker areas and reduce everyday strain or pain.

“Pilates is just as much about lengthening as it is strengthening, and this is what the spine in particular craves as we age. The box is a great option for arm exercises that others may do kneeling but that position can be more difficult as we age, so it’s inclusive in that way,” adds Emma.

“Weight-bearing can also be challenging with weakened wrists so there are plenty of alternatives for body strength that don’t require the same amount of weight, simply by using springs to be more supportive for example.”

The post EXCLUSIVE: Michelle Bridges reveals her new program set to help women through the challenges of menopause appeared first on Now To Love.

]]>
As we approach the change of life that is menopause, it’s essential to feed and replenish our body with nutrients like calcium, protein and omega-3.

Michelle Bridges says this was a key consideration when devising The Menopause Method eating plan.

“You will see a lower-carb approach to eating, as insulin resistance can be a real issue for many menopausal women,” she explains. “But you won’t see carbs demonised, as we feature a pasta dish each Wednesday. Who doesn’t love a little pasta?”

Below are two recipes from Michelle’s new eating plan!

Michelle turns 54 this year. (Image: Instagram)

Baked Eggs, Italian Style

Serves: 2

Ingredients:

 • 2 tomatoes, chopped
 • 1 zucchini, finely chopped
 • ½ red capsicum, finely chopped
 • 1 clove garlic, crushed
 • 1 tsp olive oil
 • 8 kalamata olives, pitted
 • 4 cage-free eggs
 • 20g reduced fat cheddar, grated
 • ¼ cup basil leaves

Method:

 1. Preheat oven to 190°C. Line a large baking tray with non-stick baking paper. Scatter over tomatoes, zucchini, capsicum and garlic. Drizzle with oil and toss to coat.
 2. Roast vegetables for 20 mins or until almost tender. Remove from oven and reduce temperature to 180°C.
 3. Mix olives with vegetables and divide mixture between two ovenproof dishes. Make 2 indentations in mixture in each dish. Crack an egg into each indentation and sprinkle cheese over.

Shake it off: How Chrissy lost 29kg https://www.nowtolove.com.au/news/real-life/real-weight-loss-story-with-the-lady-shake/ Mon, 26 Feb 2024 22:51:31 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/?p=505631 And how years of yo-yo dieting stopped, finally.

The post Shake it off: How Chrissy lost 29kg appeared first on Now To Love.

]]>
When Chrissy, 41, found herself unable to get up the stairs without taking a break, she knew she had to make a change. So when a friend raved about The Lady Shake, Chrissy tried it and couldn’t believe how easy it was to incorporate it into her life and the impressive results she saw.

Drink to her success

Chrissy found The Lady Shake incredibly easy to incorporate into her life. “Being as simple as replacing two meals, it was super easy to just have a shake for breakfast and a shake for lunch,” she explains. “I also made sure I had my two snacks (each approximately 150 calories and under 5 grams of sugar) and a healthy balanced evening meal.”

One of the things that impressed Chrissy was just how effortless it all was. “The Lady Shake is incredibly easy to use.” she says. “Just mix two scoops and water! Having a shake for breakfast and lunch saved me time in the morning because The Lady Shake takes the guesswork out of your day. It takes less than a minute to make breakfast and lunch.”

And for dinner? “My evening meal was anything from cauliflower fried rice and steamed dumplings, zucchini noodles and freshly made tomato sauce, lean grilled chicken or steak with salad, scrambled eggs and mushrooms on toast. I had my treat meal once a week, which was anything I felt like, from pasta, lasagne or burgers.”

It sounds so simple, but Chrissy saw remarkable results straightaway. “I lost 1.4kg in my first week,” she reveals. “I couldn’t believe the number staring back at me from the scales. This quickly became motivation for me to keep going. I had weeks with no losses or even a small gain, but weight loss isn’t linear. Consistency was key for my journey and, sure enough, my weight would drop the following week.”

Chrissy’s advice is to start now – “Start today, don’t wait for Monday or a new month or after a holiday or event, start now! This is a lifestyle change with new habits that will set you up for long-term success.”

Moving on up!

To build on her success, Chrissy, who was already active, added extra workouts into her day.

“I started walking a lot,” she explains. “Just around our neighbourhood. I also used an online workout app to do light weights, spin, yoga and combat classes. I also do Physical Culture.” Now Chrissy does weights two to three times per week, as well as cardio classes such as Spin and Combat or she walks two to three times per week as well as Physical Culture twice a week.

Chrissy’s advice is to not make exercise so complicated that it’s hard to fit into your lifestyle. “Start off with small goals; walking for 20 minutes and increasing five minutes each time you head out. You don’t need fancy equipment, you’d be surprised what you can achieve with some hand weights and a yoga mat!”

Pretty soon you’ll be looking forward to those workouts. “Exercise is vital to my mental health,” says Chrissy. “It also has helped with muscle building and toning. I am a strong advocate of women of all ages to do resistance training.”

Mastering Mindfulness

Diet, exercise and mindfulness is the trio for success. So how did Chrissy keep her motivation and look after her wellbeing during this time?

“I set small attainable goals and rewarded myself at each milestone so the overall goal wasn’t overwhelming,” says Chrissy. “I also enjoyed my treat meal each week, guilt free.”

“The sense of accomplishment is so rewarding and I feel it every single day. I jump out of bed now, instead of stumble. Knowing how much good I have done and continue to do for my health makes me look forward to the future. Now, working out is my ‘me time’. I zone out and concentrate on moving my body, clearing my thoughts and enjoying the moment.”

How is Chrissy maintaining her healthy and fabulous new figure? With The Lady Shake, of course. “I’m maintaining my loss with one shake per day, usually breakfast,” she says. “I have also kept my new healthy eating habits and not slipped back into my old ways.”

Ensure to read the label of any supplements you are taking and consult with your doctor first.

Lesley Maxwell, 66, from Melbourne, Vic, shares her story with Take 5…

Lying in my hospital bed, I was flicking through the channels when I suddenly paused, seeing muscular women in bikinis and high heels strutting on my screen.

Wow, I thought in amazement. They were competing in a body sculpting competition and looked incredible. I longed to be fit and healthy like them.

It was 2004, and I’d been hospitalised with pneumonia and asthma, giving me the kick up the bum I needed to adopt a more healthy lifestyle. Though I’d never been overweight, since the age of 18, I had often fluctuated in size.

I didn’t know how exercise correctly and found it hard to stick to diets, particularly when my three kids – Vanessa, 22, Anthony, 18, and Damien,16, were younger.

But now at 49, it was time for change.

The day after I left the hospital, I joined the gym with one goal: to look like the women I’d seen on TV.

The show had been about a local trainer, so I sought him out and asked him to train me.

Working out improves my mood and my health

“It’s not going to be easy,” he said.

And he was right! The gym was up two flights of stairs, and the first sessions were so hard I could barely walk back down the stairs afterwards.

I worked out for several hours, four days a week, slowly building my strength.

After six months of training, my coach felt I was ready to compete, so I entered my first competition – Masters over 40.

Stood on the stage, my heart nearly leapt from my chest when they announced my name as the winner.

“I can’t believe it,” I said, stunned.

Over the next 14 years, I won 35 titles in sculpting competitions worldwide.

During this time, I decided to use my experience to help other women over 40 achieve their fitness goals.

I signed up to courses online and qualified as a personal trainer.

Slowly, I started to build up clients. Some have different health issues, such as sarcopenia and osteoporosis, others just want to feel good in their clothes.
I build exercise programs to suit each person’s needs.

I took here iirst place in October 2019

Slowly, I started to build up clients. Some have different health issues, such as sarcopenia and osteoporosis, others just want to feel good in their clothes.

I build exercise programs to suit each person’s needs.

Recently, one of my younger clients broke down while we were training.

“I’ve been diagnosed with osteopenia Les,” she told me through tears.

I was positive and encouraging.

“Let’s catch it in its tracks,” I said. “We’ll do weights for at least two hours a week, and it will keep you strong.”

As we age, our health deteriorates.

Women often suffer from bone density issues like osteoporosis and muscle mass weakness after menopause, but this can be avoided with the proper training and diet.

Here I am modelling for a shoot for Boss Fitness

I’ve recently written a book called My Easy Clean Eating Guidelines to help people eat the right food while they train.

Many older women have never been in the gym or picked up a weight.

My advice is to get started as soon as you can and not leave it too late. There are loads of programs online to follow.

I have some on my website www.lesleymaxwell.fitness.

If you don’t want to do it alone, try a beginner’s session with a personal trainer or go with a family member or friend.

There are four lifts that women should learn if they want to avoid health issues – squat, lunge, push and pull.

Teamed with the right diet, they’ll stay healthy and strong longer. It’s never too late to make changes.

We lost 45kg drinking chocolate milkshakes https://www.nowtolove.com.au/health/diet-nutrition/weightloss-milkshakes-the-lady-shake-80001/ Fri, 02 Feb 2024 03:18:10 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/health/diet-nutrition/weightloss-milkshakes-the-lady-shake-80001 Mum Annie and her son Nick decided to improve their health – and changed their lives.

The post We lost 45kg drinking chocolate milkshakes appeared first on Now To Love.

]]>
A s my son Nick’s face fell, I frowned. He’d just come back from a day at the water park with his support group and should have been full of smiles. ‘I’m disappointed in myself,’ Nick, then aged 22, said. ‘They wouldn’t let me on some of the slides because of my weight.’ It broke my heart.

At 6 foot, 6 inches tall with size 16 feet, Nick had always been a big boy. But although he loved to watch Sydney Swans or Manly Sea Eagles footy games, he didn’t play much sport. Diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at three, Nick always loved big greasy breakfasts with bacon, eggs, hash browns and sausages.

My husband Brian, 59, is a great cook and we often tucked into delicious healthy Croatian dinners to celebrate his heritage. But for Nick, the lack of movement and hours playing video games meant weight had just piled on. As he wore 7XL T-shirts, buying clothes was a real challenge. And Nick wasn’t the only one who needed to lose a few kilos. Sitting at work all day doing sales admin for a cleaning company, I just couldn’t shift any weight. And my vice was Turkish Delight choccies.

A size 20, weighing 99 kilos, at a tiny 160cm tall with size 24F boobs, I’d given up hope of losing weight. A few weeks later, in February last year, I came home to find a large box on the kitchen counter. ‘It’s The Man Shake diet starter pack,’ Nick said. It included powdered shake sachets to replace Nick’s brekkies and lunches. And I was relieved it hadn’t been too expensive. That’s good, I thought, wondering if he would stick to it. When we weighed Nick, I was shocked as the scales juddered at 160 kilos.

Nick began having a chocolate shake for breakfast and lunch, with a normal dinner such as pasta or roast pork. He surprised me by sticking to it religiously. I couldn’t believe it when a month later he stepped on the scales and he’d lost eight kilos.

‘That’s amazing,’ I gasped. Well, if Nick can do it so can I! I vowed. So at the end of last April, I decided to give The Lady Shake a whirl. Before I started, though, I messaged The Lady Shake and The Man Shake team to say how good it was for Nick. They began sending certificates to reward Nick as well as hats and T-shirts – he loved it and it spurred him on.

As I have a sweet tooth, sipping the chocolate shake was just like drinking a chocolate milkshake, and there were other flavours including strawberry, vanilla and caramel that I enjoyed too. The protein in the drinks kept me feeling full, and there were nutrients in there too to help keep me healthy.

Feeling inspired, I started going walking in my lunch hour. Pounding the tracks in nearby bushland, I returned feeling refreshed and fitter. As Nick was working with me in sales admin, we began walking together. And at weekends we walked for an hour each day. Suddenly my skin was glowing and I had so much more energy.

At night we had healthy stir-fries for dinner, but allowed ourselves chicken parmi and fish and hot chips for treats. The weight slid off Nick. In six months he’d lost 24 kilos. But, even better, for every kilo he shed Nick’s confidence seemed to soar. It was wonderful to see.

He started booking tickets to see the Sydney Swans play all over the country – in Melbourne with his sister Casey, 39, and in Adelaide and on the Gold Coast on his own. He even started rubbing shoulders with the players when he got involved with club get-togethers. Soon everybody knew him.

Wherever he went, Nick took a photo for his Instagram. Seeing himself on social media with the players boosted his confidence no end. ‘I need a suit, Mum,’ he told me when he got invited by the team to a Swans cocktail party last August.

As he tried on a suit, Nick smiled so broadly I was thrilled. ‘You look wonderful,’ I said tearfully. I’d never seen him so happy and brimming with confidence. Look at him now! I’d post online at The Lady Shake Facebook group. And everyone cheered him on.

I was thrilled to find the weight sliding off me steadily too, and soon I felt more in proportion to my petite frame. ‘You look great,’ people at work marvelled. I was excited when I hit the shops and found a bra that fitted.

I’d never felt better. By Christmas I’d lost 15 kilos, weighing 84 kilos. Now my goal is 80. But Nick’s the star! Recently he was weighed at the doctors. After losing 30 kilos, which the doc said is a great weight for his height, Nick now wears 2XL. Nick is my inspiration. He’s taken up boxing and is joining a gym. It’s like having a new son. I’m so proud of what my boy’s achieved!

According to the latest figures, more than 60 percent of Australians are overweight or obese and don’t get enough exercise. Being fat and inactive has become the “norm”. You are abnormal if you are able to overcome your excuses and stay active and trim.

Don’t flog yourself

The cause of the problem is largely understood. We live in a world where physical activity has been designed out of our environment and lifestyle. It is harder to be active these days. So how do active people do it? Do they grapple with excuses and how do they overcome them? What are your excuses?

The psychology of an excuse

In psychological terms, excuses are part of your “decisional balance”. For example, you have a “thought bubble”, in which you weigh up the reasons for going for a lunchtime walk and the reasons against it. If your list of reasons against outweighs your list of reasons for going for a walk, then you’ll probably find an excuse not to.

It’s interesting that if your list of reasons for and against are about equal, then you will feel in “two minds” about it and could be swayed, depending on the circumstances. When this happens, your final decision is based on how confident you are to go for a walk, even if there are tempting reasons not to. In contrast, active people will typically give you a long list of reasons for why they like to be active and their list of excuses will be short.

What’s your excuse?

Here’s a list of common excuses for not being active and how you can turn your negative into a positive.

Excuse: “I don’t have the time.”

Turn it around: This is false. Even the busiest people in the world make time to exercise. Have a lunchtime walk, run, swim or use a gym. If your workday is too busy, get up 30 minutes earlier in the morning. Write your exercise times into your weekly and daily scheduler.

Excuse: “I have one or more injuries which stops me.”

Turn it around:Another false belief. What you are saying is your old injury stopped you and you haven’t started again. Whether your injury was a knee replacement, back pain or paraplegia, physical activity is vital to your health and could be an important part of managing your pain and reducing the chance of re-injury.

Excuse: “I have family responsibilities.”

Turn it around: Find activities that include your partner and kids. For babies and young children, use a jogger pram to get out onto the trails for walks or runs. Get organised with drinks, snacks and distractions to keep the kids content. Break the activities into bite-sized pieces (less than 30 minutes) so your children don’t get bored.

Excuse: “I’m young. I don’t need it.”

Turn it around: Young people can feel anxious and worried about things in their lives. Physical activity helps to relieve tension and anxiety is a great mood regulator.

Excuse: “I’m too old.”

Turn it around:Physical activity benefits health at any age. For example, weight-bearing exercise, like walking, improves balance, coordination, strength and bone density and can reduce the chance of a fall. In fact, the benefits of exercise are clear which has lead to this famous cliché: “We don’t slow down because we get old, we get old because we slow down.”

Excuse: “I just can’t get motivated.”

Turn it around: Re-stated, you are saying you haven’t found an activity that you enjoy. One strategy is to find a friend to exercise with or book a session with a personal trainer. It helps to regularly try something you’ve never done before, like learning to paddle a kayak or ride a mountain bike.

Your first few times exercising after a long break can feel a little daunting. You may experience a little muscle soreness and fatigue but that’s normal and usually passes within a week. Take it easy and give your body time to adapt. After a week or two into your new routine, you’ll be loving it and wonder how anyone could come up with an excuse not be active.

Many of us want to start the year off with a new habit, one that involves integrating more fitness in our lives for better physical and mental wellbeing.

But, as the year rolls on, we start to come up with excuses. Don’t let money be one of them! Try these genius ways to stay healthy for less.

Feel fit and fabulous!

(Credit: Getty)

1. Take classes for free

There’s a free beginner class on YouTube for whatever form of exercise you wish to pursue.

Roll out the yoga mat (or a towel on the carpet) and look up Yoga With Adriene – she runs 30-day programs that help it become a habit (she’s also great at encouraging newbies!).

Consider a form of exercise that is new to you, perhaps tai chi or Pilates.

Prefer group classes in real life? Just google “free yoga classes” along with your city or town. For example, a quick search for Sydney reveals outdoor classes galore.

2. Set up a home gym the smart way

While buying brand-spanking new fitness gear might sound appealing to get your home regimen started, you’ll save big bucks by checking what equipment might be available on Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace.

Fit finds for under $20.

3. Spend time walking in nature

It’s right outside and it’s free. All you need is a comfy pair of trainers.

Spending time walking outdoors needn’t be for long. Nine out of 10 Australians could reduce their risk of heart disease by walking as little as 15 minutes more each day.

Need a further nudge? Download an app that rewards you for walking.

The Qantas Wellbeing app allows you to earn frequent flyer points every time you walk – just set a goal and see the points roll in.

4. Get out in the garden

Want to burn some energy and get toned arms? Go to the shed, pull out the rake and gather fallen leaves, then crouch down and get some weeding done.

Research has shown that working in your garden is a source of moderate to vigorous physical activity in younger adults, while providing low to moderate physical activity in older adults.

The Daily Grind: Most people don’t realise they grind their teeth https://www.nowtolove.com.au/health/body/teeth-grinding-79807/ Sun, 14 Jan 2024 19:30:00 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/health/body/teeth-grinding-79807 Headaches, tooth sensitivity and neck pain are all signs of this common habit.

The post The Daily Grind: Most people don’t realise they grind their teeth appeared first on Now To Love.

]]>
Jaw aches, headaches and neck pain are the kinds of things that many of us experience.

While there can be many causes, a common reason comes down to teeth grinding, something that many of us do without realising.

This can be a side affect or stress and can even lead to tooth chipping.

(Credit: Getty)

And, as many dentists will tell you, a growing number of us are doing it more than ever.

“Bruxism is the medical term that refers to the involuntary act of grinding or clenching the teeth,” explains Dr Gamer Verdian, a dentist and founder of Dental Lounge in Sydney.

You might sometimes catch yourself clenching or grinding your teeth when you’re stressed or concentrating.

However, it mostly occurs during sleep, so it’s possible you may not know you’re doing it.

“Many people with nocturnal bruxism remain unaware of their condition until symptoms appear or until a dental professional notices telltale signs of tooth wear,” Dr Verdian says.

What causes it?

Bruxism is surprisingly common in kids, although most children eventually outgrow it.

However, it can rear its head during any stage of life, especially when we’re stressed.

“We have a seen a huge uptick since COVID as the daily stresses of Australians [are] magnified,” Dr Verdian says.

“Potential factors include increased daily stresses, lifestyle changes and perhaps even an increase in sleep disorders.”

Night-time bruxism is common in people with sleep disorders like snoring and sleep apnoea. Smoking, alcohol and some medications can also increase your risk.

A dental check-up can help identify any symptoms of bruxism.

(Credit: Getty)

The symptoms

Over time, grinding and clenching can wear down the hard layer of enamel on our teeth.

This can make them flatter and shorter, and cause other problems like cracks and tooth sensitivity.

“The most common presentation we see in our practices is unexpected chipping or breaking,” Dr Verdian says.

Additional signs include headaches, face and neck pain, soreness in the jaw or a popping feeling when chewing, yawning or speaking.

Excessive grinding can also build up the masseter muscle of the jaw, causing the bottom half of the face to appear wider.

If night-time clenching and grinding is loud enough, it can cause partner disturbance.

“Long-term bruxism can lead to a range of complications,” Dr Verdian says.

“This includes temporomandibular joint disorders, myofascial pain, dental complications like tooth loss, and even changes in facial appearance.”

Affordable dental options will give you something to smile about!

(Credit: Getty)

Can I stop it?

Clenching and grinding can be difficult habits to shake, especially since many of us aren’t even aware when it’s happening.

Dr Verdian says the most common treatment for bruxism is to wear a nightguard or occlusal splint.

They start at around $500, but they may cost more depending on what your dentist recommends.

“These are our most common frontline defense against bruxism. There are many different types and designs,” he explains.

“They offer a protective barrier between the upper and lower teeth, reducing wear.”

Some dentists now provide Botox injections, which work by relaxing the masseter muscle.

This typically costs between $400 and $1000, but Dr Verdian advises that the effects aren’t permanent.

“They offer temporary relief and can come with side effects,” he explains.

“Long-term medication use isn’t typically recommended as a primary solution for bruxism.”

Depending on the cause, it can sometimes help to get to the heart of the problem.

For instance, if stress is your main trigger, strategies like meditation, deep breathing or counselling could be beneficial.

“While bruxism can’t always be ‘cured’ in the traditional sense, it can be effectively managed,” says Dr Verdian.

“Interventional strategies depend largely on the underlying causes and the patient’s specific symptoms.”

Dealing with the fear of sickness as a cancer survivor https://www.nowtolove.com.au/health/cancer-survivors-support-79260/ Mon, 13 Nov 2023 00:28:29 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/health/body/cancer-survivors-support-79260 Many cancer survivors live worrying that it will return – but talking things through can help.

The post Dealing with the fear of sickness as a cancer survivor appeared first on Now To Love.

]]>
When you’ve been through the hugely distressing experience of cancer, you might expect that surviving your ordeal would bring that emotional roller-coaster to an end.

But for more than 60 per cent of people living with or beyond cancer, the fear of it returning – known as fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) – presents a whole new set of challenges.

Don’t let your fears alienate you from family.

(Credit: Getty)

“It has a really significant impact on people’s mental health and their quality of life,” says cancer researcher Dr Ben Smith from the University of New South Wales.

“It can make it really hard to engage with other people and activities because people are so caught up in worry. That can impact on people’s relationships and their ability to work and carry out the everyday activities that bring purpose and meaning to their lives.”

For some, FCR means they’re reluctant to commit to future events, such as family weddings or overseas trips. And for those living with severe FCR, any unexpected physical symptoms, such as a headache, can spark renewed panic.

“Physical symptoms are a really common trigger for these fears,” says Dr Smith.

“It can trap people in this cycle of constantly feeling like they need to immediately go and see healthcare practitioners – and there are costs involved with that, both in terms of time and finances.”

Access free services and support for carers from Carer Gateway.

(Credit: Getty)

FCR can be an isolating experience. Dr Smith says some people are reluctant to talk to doctors about their fears because they don’t want to seem ungrateful for the treatment and care they’ve received.

And it can be hard to share their feelings with loved ones, too – some cancer survivors worry about being a burden.

Unfortunately in many cases it’s very difficult for doctors to completely rule out the possibility that cancer could return, Dr Smith says.

So the challenge for survivors of cancer is to find a balance between being vigilant about potential symptoms of the disease returning, without being too focused on that possibility. Being fully informed can help.

“What we try and encourage people to do – and it has to be in consultation with your healthcare team – is to develop a plan around, ‘What symptoms should I specifically look out for? When I do have these symptoms, how long should I wait?'” explains Dr Smith.

So how can you manage your anxiety around cancer coming back?

While worrying is common, try to limit time spent doing it.

(Credit: Getty)

It might be helpful to set aside 15 to 30 minutes a day as dedicated worry time, Dr Smith suggests, so that you limit the amount of time you spend reflecting on your fears.

Talking to other cancer survivors who understand your feelings can help, so look for support groups online or in your area. If FCR is having a significant impact on your quality of life, Dr Smith suggests seeing a psychologist to learn strategies to manage your fear.

“The interventions that have been shown to be most effective tend to help people not eliminate fears of recurrence, but they’re focused on trying to change the way people engage with their worries and help them get less caught up in them, such as mindfulness.”

If you’d like to register for Dr Smith’s online support program for FCR, visit I Conquer Fear.

Are you a carer?

Do you look after someone who lives with a disability, has a medical or mental health condition, or is frail due to age?

You might be young or old, looking after a relative or friend 24 hours a day or just some of the time.

If this sounds like you, you may be an unpaid carer – and you can get help.

Carer Gateway provides a range of free services and support, no matter where you live.

For more information call Carer Gateway on 1800 422 737 Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. Go to Carer Gateway.

What is brain fog? https://www.nowtolove.com.au/health/what-is-brain-fog-79166/ Sun, 05 Nov 2023 19:30:00 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/health/mind/what-is-brain-fog-79166 If you're struggling to think clearly, chances are those mid-life hormones might be to blame.

The post What is brain fog? appeared first on Now To Love.

]]>
Whether you’re perimenopausal, in full-blown menopause or just a woman who’s curious about what’s to come, chances are you’re aware of some changes you experience as you age.

And as you reach menopause, you should know that brain fog – the cognitive symptoms associated with reaching menopausal age – is real!

GP Dr Ginni Mansberg explains that there are some things you can do to help:

Brain fog is a very common side-effect of perimenopause and menopause.

(Image: Getty)

What do perimenopause and menopause have to do with the brain?

“Naturally, lots of women who see me are experiencing brain fog and are terrified about what this means for their brains,” says Dr Mansberg.

“Is this the beginnings of dementia?” Thankfully, Alzheimer’s disease is exceptionally rare at the time most women go through menopause and perimenopause, so it’s unlikely to be anything more than brain fog at this stage of life.

“I like to say to my patients that if you lose your keys, you should consider it normal. But if you look at your keys and can’t work out what to do with them, it’s time to worry.”

“The good news is that for the very, very large majority of women, this has nothing to do with Alzheimer’s disease,” says Professor Pauline Maki from the University of Illinois.

Having said that, see a doctor if you have brain fog plus a parent who has or had early onset dementia, which is defined as onset before age 60 (this could indicate a genetic link).

Or if other people, such as close friends, colleagues and family members, are worried about your brain. If you feel that your brain fog is so bad that you can’t work, again a proper assessment should be done.

An exercise routine is one way that brain fog can be minimised.

(Image: Getty)

How to battle brain fog

 • Go easy on yourself at this time. Yes, menopause brain really is a thing, and it’s much more common than you probably think – women can’t expect cognitive perfection. We all make mistakes. Our brains can’t be expected to be efficient all the time.

 • Don’t just put up with hot flushes. We are not talking about feeling a bit glowy once a day. If your hot flushes make you uncomfortable and especially if they are affecting your sleep, get them sorted. Studies have found that the worse your hot flushes, the worse you perform on memory tests. Ditto your sleep.

 • If you are experiencing depression, it’s time to get it sorted. Perimenopause is the highest risk time for women to experience a mood disorder. Depression not only interferes with your sleep, but your cognitive performance as well.

 • Control the things you can. When things are a bit foggy upstairs, a healthy diet and exercise routine will be your best friends!

 • Use compensatory cognitive strategies/external memory aids. These can be super-simple strategies to compensate for your brain being a little fuzzy.

Caroline Gurvich, deputy director of Monash Alfred Psychiatry Research Centre, says such strategies have been well studied for brain diseases, from schizophrenia to traumatic brain injury.

They’re less studied for menopause, but Caroline says her patients find them really helpful. One suggestion is to create a permanent spot where you always leave your keys.

“Use as much as you can to make your life as easy as possible,” Professor Gurvich recommends.

Brain fog can occur during menopause.

Sound familiar? If so, it could be time to create your own at-home wellness kit (and put some organisation strategies in place, too).

Creating a simple yet effective at-home wellness kit is a practical way to prioritise the health and wellbeing of you and your family. Plus, you can customise your kit to suit your unique health needs and lifestyle.

When it comes to where to keep everything, use either a designated cabinet with shelves, or keep supplies in a bag or a box with sections so it’s easy to rifle through. And make sure to store it in an easily accessible and secure location in your home.

Keep reading for the essentials to include in your at-home wellness kit.

If you have kids, you’ll want to ensure bandages and medications are suitable for their size and needs.

Just breathe: 7 things you can do to avoid an asthma flare up https://www.nowtolove.com.au/health/ways-to-avoid-asthma-attack-35815/ Thu, 14 Sep 2023 07:10:00 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/health/body/ways-to-avoid-asthma-attack-35815 You got this.

]]>
Australia has been warned by experts to be ready for more catastrophic conditions and the worst fire season seen in four years. Already, NSW Rural Fire Service have begun ‘hazard reduction burns’ and in doing so, a blanket of smoke has covered over Sydney.

Those suffering with asthma are particularly at risk as smoke and increased air pollution can trigger such symptoms.

Continue scrolling to find out more on asthma and how to manage it.

What is asthma?

Asthma is a long-term lung disease characterised by sensitive, inflamed and narrow airways that react to triggers and hinder breathing.

“When a flare-up strikes, the muscles around the windpipe squeeze tight and the airways swell, making it difficult to breathe,” says Dr Burdon.

Symptoms include chest tightness, shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing. Treatment usually involves learning to recognise your own triggers and taking steps to avoid them, as well as using both relieving and preventative medication.

“Common triggers include dust, pollen, animal fur, smoking, certain foods, medications, colouring agents and infections,” Dr Burdon says.

In 2023, Sydney was surrounded by smoke as a result of backburning.

(Image: Getty)

How can I manage my risk of asthma?

“Asthma can develop for the first time at any age, but if you’ve got a family member who has it, you’re more likely to get it,” he says.

New research from the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveals that women over the age of 55 are most at risk of dying from asthma compared to any other demographic.

“When older people develop asthma, it can be more severe and harder to treat,” Dr Burdon says. “Women over 75 are recording nearly three times the number of deaths than men of the same age.”

While there’s no definitive answer as to why older women are more affected than other groups, Dr Burdon says it’s likely that a combination of lifestyle, biological and environmental factors is to blame.

“Menopause and hormone replacement in particular are two unique features among older women that may play a role in how asthma affects them differently,” he suggests.

Dr Burdon says the key to controlling symptoms and preventing flare-ups is appropriate asthma management.

“It’s about using asthma-preventing and relieving medication and following an up-to-date asthma action plan prepared by your doctor,” he adds.

1. Don’t ignore or dismiss symptoms

“Most asthmatics know the difference between what’s normal for them and what isn’t,” says respiratory physician Dr Jonathan Burdon. “It’s crucial to be able to recognise when your symptoms are getting worse and take appropriate precautions or strategies to reverse the process.”

2. See your GP for regular check-ups

The aim of asthma care is to control your symptoms as much as possible. “While annual GP visits really are essential, you can only get a prescription with five repeats, so it’s worthwhile having a check-up every six months, when you’ll need more scripts,” he says.

3. Update your asthma action plan

A written asthma action plan should be reviewed regularly to ensure you can recognise worsening asthma symptoms and give clear instructions on what to do in response. “Your

GP or asthma specialist will be able to tailor a plan to your individual needs,” Dr Burdon says.

4. Use your medications correctly

Using your inhaler correctly can help you manage your symptoms more effectively. Ask your GP, asthma nurse or pharmacist to show you the right way to use it. “People not taking their medications as prescribed is a common problem, and that’s when they can get into strife,” he says.

5. Talk to your GP and pharmacist

Some prescription and over-the-counter medications can trigger asthma or make it worse. “Always tell your doctor and pharmacist that you have asthma, and check with them before changing or stopping any medication,” Dr Burdon says.

6. Get the flu jab

Influenza and pneumonia are serious conditions that can trigger asthma. “If you get sick, it’s highly likely that your asthma will flare up at the same time, so it’s worth having the annual flu vaccine, which is free for people over the age of 65,” he explains.

7. Quit smoking

Being a smoker makes asthma symptoms worse, and it can reduce the effectiveness of asthma medications. Ask your GP or pharmacist for advice on quitting. Phone 137 848 or visit [Quit Now] (www.quitnow.gov.au)

Is there a cure for asthma?

While asthma medications have been around for decades, research is focused on refining its treatment and working towards finding a cure.

“The most recent developments focus on severe forms, such as eosinophilic asthma, where there are too many eosinophils – a type of white blood cell – in the blood and lungs, which can make symptoms difficult to control and provoke acute flare-ups,” he says.

“There are a couple of new drugs on the market that aim to control the effect of eosinophils and reduce the frequency of flare-ups by either blocking or inhibiting the action

of specific antibodies that cause asthma to worsen.”

For those who find their usual medications are no longer working, there is also a relatively new treatment, called bronchial thermoplasty, which aims to reduce lung spasms by applying heat directly to the airways.

What is Thunderstorm asthma?

“Thunderstorm asthma” is a rare form that you may not have heard of until late 2016, when heavy storms in Melbourne caused severe breathing difficulties across the city.

“It happens when the rain causes grass pollen grains to rupture, resulting in lots of smaller particles being released into the air, which can irritate the lungs,” Dr Burdon explains. “This usually occurs in spring and summer, when pollen count is high, and it can affect anyone, even non-asthmatics.”

As a result of the freak event on November 21, 2016, there were nine deaths across the Victorian capital and more than 8500 people ended up in hospital. There are a number of ways to lessen the effects of these outbreaks.

“Firstly, update your current written asthma management plan, so that you know what to do if your asthma gets worse,” Dr Burdon says. “Secondly, use your preventer medication every day, especially if high pollen counts or storms are predicted. And if your asthma starts to worsen, seek medical attention, either by calling an ambulance or going to an emergency department.”

Brought to you by Chemists’ Own.

Spring brings with it a sense of joy and optimism like no other season. Warmer days renew our spirits, and we are surrounded by vibrant blooms and nature in all its glory. Bliss!

But the springtime sneezy season is also associated with allergies, and it can be challenging for many people.

Hayfever and allergies are especially extreme at this time of year due to the high pollen levels from blooming plants and trees, leading to symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes. Taking preventive measures and using appropriate medications can help manage these allergy symptoms effectively.

Remember, what works best can vary from person to person, so it’s important to find a combination of strategies that work for you. If your symptoms are severe or if they significantly affect your quality of life, consult a healthcare professional for personalised guidance and treatment options.

Already feeling that you have a runny and stuffy nose? Read on for tips to help you prepare and manage your allergy symptoms this spring.

Know your triggers

Identify what specifically triggers your allergies. Common culprits in the spring include pollen from trees, grasses, and flowers. Understanding your triggers can help you take targeted measures to reduce exposure.

Monitor pollen levels

Keep an eye on pollen forecasts in your area. Many weather apps and websites, such as WeatherZone, provide this information. On high pollen days, consider staying indoors, especially during peak pollen hours (usually early morning).

Keep windows closed

While it’s tempting to open windows to let in the fresh air, this can also allow pollen to enter your home. Keep windows and doors closed during high pollen periods, and use air conditioning with a clean filter instead.

Princess Kate is an allergy sufferer.

Use air purifiers

Air purifiers are designed to ensure that we breathe the cleanest of air in the spaces we live in the most. Consider using high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters in your home. These can help trap airborne allergens and improve indoor air quality.

Regular cleaning

Dust and vacuum your home frequently using a vacuum cleaner equipped with a HEPA filter. This can help remove allergens like pollen, dust mites and pet dander.

Personal care

Make sure you shower and change clothes after spending time outdoors, particularly on high pollen days. This helps prevent pollen from spreading throughout your home and clinging to your hair and clothing. Even simply washing your face and hands when you come in from outside can help too.

Medications

Consult with a pharmacist or healthcare professional to determine the best over-the-counter or prescription allergy medications for you. Antihistamines, decongestants, and nasal corticosteroids can help manage symptoms.

Nasal irrigation

Using a saline nasal rinse or a neti pot can help flush out allergens and relieve nasal congestion.

Eye care

If you experience itchy, watery eyes, consider using eye drops to relieve discomfort. You can also wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from pollen.

Consult an allergist

If your symptoms are severe or persistent, consider seeing an allergist. They can conduct tests to identify your specific allergens and provide personalised advice and treatment options.

In the realm of fitness and holistic wellness, Pilates has emerged as a popular practice that combines core strength, flexibility, and mindful movement.

In fact, one of the best parts about Pilates is the ease with which you can do this from the comfort of your own home. With the help of a couple of helpful accessories, you can turn the burn up to 100 and get your sweat on.

Truthfully, you really only need a good quality mat to get your start in Pilates, and we are taking a look at some of the very best.

Is there a difference between a Pilates mat and a yoga mat?

While both Pilates and yoga mats may seem interchangeable at first glance, they are designed with specific practices in mind. Pilates mats are often thicker than yoga mats, offering enhanced cushioning to cushion the spine and joints during exercises.

The added thickness of Pilates mats ensures that the mat can absorb impact and provide optimal support, which is crucial for the controlled and precise movements of Pilates routines.

Whereas yoga mats are thinner and boast a stickier surface. This aids in maintaining balance and stability during yoga’s stationary poses, with their grip preventing any untimely slips.

What is the best thickness for Pilates mat?

The right thickness of a Pilates mat can greatly impact your comfort and performance during workouts.

Generally, Pilates mats range from 8mm to 15mm in thickness. A mat that’s too thin might not provide enough cushioning for your spine and joints, leading to discomfort or pain during exercises.

On the flip side, a mat that’s too thick might compromise your stability and balance, affecting the precision that Pilates demands.

A recommended thickness for Pilates mats is around 10mm to 12mm. This range strikes a balance between cushioning and stability, allowing for controlled movements while ensuring your body’s comfort. The thicker padding supports your back, hips, and other pressure points, promoting proper alignment and reducing strain.

You’ve probably heard the buzz about gut health lately, and if you’re looking to take charge of your digestion, you’re in the right spot.

A happy gut can do wonders – think vibrant skin, extra energy, a strong immune system, and a happily balanced digestive track.

But where to start?

What vitamins and supplements help with gut health?

Maintaining a healthy gut involves a combination of factors, including a balanced diet, proper hydration, regular exercise, stress management, and good sleep.

While vitamins and supplements can play a supportive role, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional before adding any new supplements to your routine.

That being said, here are some ingredients to look out for when on the hunt for a good supplement:

 • Probiotics: Probiotics are live beneficial bacteria that can help maintain a balanced gut microbiome. They’re available in various strains and forms, such as capsules, powders, and fermented foods. Look for strains like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium.

 • Prebiotics: Prebiotics are fibres that serve as food for the beneficial bacteria in your gut. They help nourish the existing gut bacteria and promote their growth. Foods like garlic, onions, bananas, and asparagus are natural sources of prebiotics.

 • Digestive enzymes: Digestive enzymes can aid in breaking down food more efficiently, which may help reduce digestive discomfort. Amylase, lipase, and protease are some common enzymes that assist in the digestion of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.

 • L-Glutamine: L-Glutamine is an amino acid that supports gut lining integrity. It’s crucial for maintaining the health of the cells in your intestinal walls, which can contribute to better digestion and absorption.

 • Omega-3 fatty acids: Omega-3s have anti-inflammatory properties that can benefit gut health by reducing inflammation in the digestive tract. They’re commonly found in fatty fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts.

Do you ever feel like your hair, skin, and nails are just not as healthy as they used to be? Maybe you’re noticing more hair loss, dry skin, or brittle nails. If so, you’re not alone. Millions of people around the world experience similar problems.

The good news is that there are things you can do to improve the health of your hair, skin, and nails. One of the most important things is to make sure you’re getting enough of the essential vitamins and minerals that they need.

The introduction of a targeted vitamin or supplement that works to support your hair, skin and nails can make a total difference in their health and strength.

But finding the right vitamins from reputable companies can be hard, which is why we’ve done a deep dive into what to look for.

What vitamins are good for thinning hair and nails?

There are many different hair, skin, and nail vitamins on the market, so it can be difficult to know which ones are right for you. Here are some of the key vitamins that can help improve your hair, skin, and nails:

 • Biotin: Biotin is a B vitamin that is essential for the production of keratin, a protein that is found in hair, skin, and nails. Biotin deficiency can lead to hair loss, brittle nails, and dry skin.

 • Zinc: Zinc is another important mineral for hair, skin, and nails. Zinc helps to produce collagen, which is a protein that gives your skin its strength and elasticity. Zinc deficiency can lead to hair loss, acne, and slow-healing wounds.

 • Iron: Iron is essential for transporting oxygen throughout your body. When your body doesn’t have enough iron, it can lead to hair loss, fatigue, and pale skin.

 • Vitamin A: Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin that is essential for skin health. Vitamin A deficiency can lead to dry, flaky skin, and can also increase your risk of developing skin cancer.

 • Vitamin C: Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps protect your skin from damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can damage your cells and lead to premature ageing.

If you are considering taking hair, skin, and nail vitamins, it is important to talk to your doctor first. Your doctor can help you determine if you are deficient in any of the key vitamins and minerals that are important for hair, skin, and nail health.

Ensure to read the label of any supplements you are taking and consult with your doctor first.

If you’re a runner, you know that finding the right pair of running shoes is like finding the Holy Grail. Ensuring your feet stay comfortable and well-protected while pounding the pavement is of utmost importance.

Yet, the vast amount of information available on what to consider and which shoes to buy can be overwhelming. Which is why we turned to an expert to guide us in finding the best running shoes.

Now To Love spoke with James Chan, the Head of Marketing Pacific at renowned global sportswear brand, Reebok, to get the inside scoop.

Does the type of running shoe matter?

First things first, does your sneaker actually matter when it comes to running? According to James, the right shoe can absolutely impact your performance, no matter your expertise level.

“Running shoes can indeed have a positive impact on performance, even for casual or beginner runners. A well-designed running shoe provides essential support, cushioning, and stability that can enhance comfort, reduce the risk of injury, and promote a more efficient running stride,” says James.

Important factors in a quality running shoe can include anything from stability to flexibility, cushioning or traction. When it comes down to it, it all depends on the individual runner and their needs.

When it comes to the design of a good running shoe, James advised that “designing running shoes for different types of runners involves considering factors like cushioning level (more for beginners, potentially less for advanced runners), support features, and biomechanical considerations”.

“Biomechanics, including factors like pronation (foot roll), impact forces, and stride length, influence shoe design. Different shoes offer varying levels of pronation control or support, cushioning materials, and flexibility to accommodate different foot strikes and running styles,” he says.

What should you look for when buying running shoes?

According to James, “shoppers should consider factors such as their running style, foot shape, terrain, and desired level of support and cushioning”.

“It’s important to get properly fitted, consider the shoe’s durability, and test the shoes through a short jog or run before making a final decision”, he adds.

“You can’t assume it won’t happen to you”: Ita Buttrose launches osteoporosis awareness campaign https://www.nowtolove.com.au/health/ita-buttrose-osteoporosis-78406/ Tue, 01 Aug 2023 04:15:00 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/health/body/ita-buttrose-osteoporosis-78406 The media mogul is encouraging people to look after their bone health.

The post “You can’t assume it won’t happen to you”: Ita Buttrose launches osteoporosis awareness campaign appeared first on Now To Love.

]]>
She educated an entire generation of Cleo readers about women’s sexual health and empowerment in the ’70s, and Ita Buttrose has continued to spread the word about important issues of the day ever since.

Now she has a new message for Aussie women – if we want to stay healthy, we can’t ignore our bones.

Buttrose is sharing an important message.

(Image: Getty)

As an ambassador for The Big O, the media icon is on a mission to get us talking about bone density scans.

“Good health, particularly as we get older is so important because it allows us to continue to do all the things we want to do,” she tells Woman’s Day.

“But it’s very hard to get away from the fact that 40 percent of people over 70 have never had a bone density scan.”

While Ita says that most Australians know about osteoporosis, they often mistakenly think it won’t affect them.

“Two in three Australians over the age of 70 are at risk of osteoporosis,” she explains. “You can’t assume it won’t happen to you.”

Buttrose is partnering with our sister publication, Australian Women’s Weekly, to launch The Big O campaign.

(Image: Getty)

DO I NEED A SCAN?

Osteoporosis can happen to anyone, including men. However, the risks increase for women as they reach their 50s.

“As we get older, our bones become more fragile and we lose oestrogen after menopause. All of these things have an impact,” says Ita.

A bone density scan (also known as a DEXA scan) is the best way to keep track of your bones. Osteoporosis expert Professor Peter Ebeling from Monash University says this is fully covered by Medicare once you turn 70.

“It’s reimbursed by the government,” he says. You may also be covered if you are younger and have certain risk factors.

The first step is to book a chat with your GP, who will ask you about your health and family history, as well as medications you take and if you went through menopause early.

Osteoporosis typically presents no symptoms.

(Image: Getty)

WHAT DOES THE SCREENING INVOLVE?

Once you’ve got your referral, Ita says having a scan couldn’t be simpler. “I’ve never had to wait, you just make the appointment and turn up,” she explains.

“It’s the easiest thing in the world, you just hop on the bed. You don’t have to take your clothes off, you just lie there. I usually nod off, it’s so comfortable.”

The scan takes around 10 to 20 minutes and is completely painless.

“A large scanning arm passes over your body to measure bone density in the skeleton using low-dose X-rays,” says Professor Ebeling. “This is then used to produce an image of the scanned area.”

Osteoporosis can be treated, and the faster it’s detected the sooner you can begin. “A DEXA scan will alert your GP if your skeleton is showing signs of bone loss and if you need to take action,” says Professor Ebeling.

Bone density is measured through low density x-ray.

(Image: Getty)

HOW TO SUPPORT YOUR BONES

At 81, Ita continues to break barriers while challenging stereotypes about women and age.

The ABC chair says she knows plenty of women who live life to the fullest as they get older, but important steps like looking after your bones play a crucial role in maintaining independence.

“The statistics show that one in four people die within 12 months [after a] hip fracture,” she explains.

“If you have a really bad fracture, or fall and break your hip and you don’t know that you’ve got fragile bones, your longevity can be threatened.”

There is plenty that you can do to support your bones. Along with staying up-to-date with her DEXA scans, Ita also takes vitamin D and exercises regularly.

“I have four sessions at a gym every week. I do two hours of strengthening and two hours of balance because that’s another issue as you get older,” she explains.

“[You need to] find out how to protect your body and do everything you can.” Most importantly of all, Ita says staying well gives you the opportunity to enjoy many vibrant years ahead.

“All my friends are active. Some of them are on walking sticks and they all get out and about. I think older people have a great zest for living,” she says.

“When you get older, you don’t worry so much. You’ve got a lot more tolerance, you understand people better.

I can look at people and think, ‘Oh, that person’s a bit nervous. I’ll try and put them at ease.’ You know what you want, you know when to shove, you know when to shove off. It’s really good.”

Low-impact workouts like Pilates and Yoga are having their time in the spotlight, and have opened up the world of resistance training to a whole new demographic. This includes lightweight workouts with the assistance of wearable weights, which can add a whole new level to your workouts.

Wearable weights are a game changer for those looking to up the burn during their workouts, and as opposed to traditional dumbbells or weights, they’re super easy to incorporate into your everyday exercise.

They’re like your fitness secret weapon, adding resistance to your movements and making your muscles work harder.

Are wearable weights worth it?

Adding weights to your low-intensity workouts can be a game-changer if you want to push yourself further. Benefits can include:

 • Enhanced calories burnt: By incorporating additional resistance into your movements, you can elevate your calorie burn even without conscious effort.

 • Muscle toning benefits: Wearable weights effectively target various muscle groups, fostering strength development and muscle toning. Whether you seek well-defined arms, toned glutes, or a sculpted core, these ingenious tools have got you covered.

 • Cardiovascular advantages: Wearing weights while doing cardio activities like walking or jogging amps up your heart rate, giving your cardiovascular system an excellent workout.

 • Bone density support: Weight-bearing exercises are great for your bones, and guess what? Wearable weights make almost any exercise a weight-bearing one. That means stronger bones and a lower risk of osteoporosis.

What weights should I use?

When it comes to wearable weights, the ideal weight varies based on your fitness level and comfort. If you’re a beginner, start with lighter options, like wrist and ankle weights around 0.5 to 1.4 kgs.

As you get more experienced, try 1.4 to 2.3kg. Advanced users might go heavier, like above 2.3 kilograms (2300 grams) or even up to 4.5 kilograms (4500 grams).

For weighted vests, begin with a lighter one, around 2.3 to 4.5kg, and work your way up. Always choose weights that feel comfortable and don’t strain your body. If you’re unsure, seek advice from a fitness professional to find what suits your goals best!

What is high cholesterol?

We know to worry about high cholesterol, but what really is it? Cholesterol is a type of fat that is needed to build and repair cells in your body and to make hormones.

Now, the key distinction to make is that high cholesterol refers to high LDL cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol) which increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

What are the symptoms of high cholesterol?

The unfortunate reality of high cholesterol is that it has no clear symptoms although two in five Australians live with it, according to The Heart Foundation. The good news, there are multiple ways you can start to lower your cholesterol.

We always advise that if you think you have high cholesterol, speak to a medical professional as they need to assess all your risk factors for cardiovascular disease and decide if medication is necessary.

Here are some lifestyle changes you can make that will help in your effort to lower your cholesterol and improve your heart health.

Lifestyle change: Diet

Cholesterol in our diet might only play a small part, but what we eat has a big role in how we manage our cholesterol levels.

To lower your cholesterol, reduce your intake of saturated fats and trans fats and replace them with healthy fats, and more soluble fibre.

But in reality, what do those foods look like? Here are some cholesterol-friendly meal and food ideas:

Breakfast:

 • Oats: porridge, overnight oats, or try our muesli cup recipe.

 • Nuts: specifically almonds, walnuts and peanuts are good for the heart.

 • Fruits: add apple, strawberry, and citrus fruits as a side to your morning oats as they are rich in pectin which is a soluble fibre.

 • Avocado: Make sure to have some avocado with your eggs in the morning.

Lifestyle change: Exercise

Physical activity increases levels of HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) which helps remove LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) from the blood.

The Australian Government of Health and Aged Care suggests adults should be doing around 2.5-5 hours of moderate exercise per week or 1.25-2.5 vigorous exercise.

This type of exercise makes your heart rate higher and makes you breathe more heavily.

If you aren’t a runner try out boxing, circuit training, or even an incline walk at a moderate pace; work with your doctor to figure out an exercise plan that suits you.

Aim to do resistance training such as weightlifting or your own body weight training at least twice a week as they are known to increase HDL cholesterol.

Lifestyle change: Alcohol intake & smoking

(Credit: Getty)

Alcohol increases your levels of triglycerides which along with LDL cholesterol can raise your risk of heart disease.

Limiting your intake doesn’t mean cutting out alcohol completely, limit yourself to 10 standard drinks per week.

Smoking reduces HDL cholesterol and increases the rate of fatty plaques forming in the walls of arteries making your blood more likely to clot.

Stopping smoking is one of the best things you can do for your heart and blood vessel health. Call Quitline 13 7848 to talk to someone about quitting smoking. Aboriginal Quitline is another option for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who smoke.

How to treat a cold sore in under 24 hours https://www.nowtolove.com.au/health/how-to-treat-a-cold-sore-78338/ Sun, 23 Jul 2023 23:11:30 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/health/body/how-to-treat-a-cold-sore-78338 Three small things you can do to help alleviate the symptoms of a pesky cold sore.

The post How to treat a cold sore in under 24 hours appeared first on Now To Love.

Oh no! You’ve got a cold sore right before something important. Maybe it’s date night with the hubby or going out with your friends for a night on the town? Before you start panicking about the small blister forming around your mouth, don’t worry, we got you.

Don’t skip ahead on how to treat it just yet, as it’s important to understand what you actually have. You contracted cold sores through Herpes Simplex Virus, spread through direct physical touch.

Before you start tracking down every person you’ve ever been in contact with, it’s important to know it’s not life threatening and will remain dormant… minus the pesky flare ups here and there. This is where we come in, helping you get through life, one cold sore at a time.

Read on to find out the three things you can do to help treat a cold sore.

Ask your pharmacist for the best antiviral drug to suit your needs.

(Image: Getty)

1. Antiviral tablets

You can get a single dose of antiviral tablets without a prescription in Australia from your pharmacist. All you have to do is talk to your pharmacist and explain your sticky cold sore situation. They will be able to provide you with expert advice on what is available for you to use and what you can expect to happen.

Be sure to keep the area and your hands clean as you treat your cold sore.

2. Antiviral creams

When visiting the pharmacist, you can also talk to them about antiviral creams and topical solutions. As always, be sure to ask the pharmacist for what would work best for you. When using a cream, be sure to disinfect the area you are going to apply it onto, always read the label and follow the directions for use. And remember, after touching the Herpes Simplex Virus, make sure to wash your hands.

If you don’t have an icepack on hand don’t fret, as you can put a damp cloth in the freezer for a similar affect.

3. Home remedies

In the short-term period, you can help alleviate the soreness by applying an ice pack. Plus, you can even ransack your pantry to find honey, lemon juice or apple cider vinegar to apply directly onto the cold sore for their natural healing properties.

And that’s how you can treat your cold sore in 24 hours, if you get to it early. Unfortunately, it does take some time to heal, so you will need to do what you can to ensure you take care of your lips and the skin surrounding the cold sore.
